24 Hour Charity Tennis Marathon SUCCESS – May 2014
As a member of Haverfordwest Lawn Tennis Club, Richard C Davies loves playing tennis and involves himself in all aspects of the club, as a team player, committee member and events organiser.
Over recent years, Richard and his wife Kathy have had wonderful support from Shalom House, who provide residential palliative care in St. Davids. Shalom House is a very worthy local charitable organisation and Richard was very keen to raise much-needed funds to repay the kindness they have shown him. With this in mind, he set about organising a 24-hour tennis marathon on the May bank holiday weekend. With the support of the tennis club committee and members, the use of the new floodlights and the generosity of both local businesses and the press, Richard would play singles for the full 24 hours, selecting a different tennis club member for each hour. The event went like clockwork, with Richard continuing to smile from start to finish. He looked as fresh at the end, as he did at the start, which is tantamount to his weekly gruelling fitness programme, which includes lots of running and visits to the gym.
The end of the marathon was celebrated with large crowds counting down the stopwatch. From the courtside, Richard thanked all those present for their enormous contribution and invited them to join him in the clubhouse for a sumptuous afternoon tea party prepared by the ladies committee, all guzzled down with large jugs of Pimms.
The players were all given a couple of weeks to collect in their sponsorship monies, and we can now reveal the TOTAL amount raised is £7433.04 – a staggering amount, showing how wonderful the people of Pembrokeshire are in supporting local charity. Not only this, but we salute Richard on his individual achievement and wish him continued success, both on and off the tennis court.
